The child I will be using for the communication strategies has speech and language delays. He has difficulty with coming up with words to use and often mumbles and connects his speech to where it is difficult to understand what he says. Often, he whines and cries because he does not know what to say to express his wants and needs.
The communication strategies will be extremely beneficial for this child be he often does not know the words to use or chooses just not to speak.I believe the strategies commenting and expanding will be most useful for him. Those strategies help build vocabulary which is what this child needs. He needs to hear words while he goes through his day. By the adults in his life using and exposing him to language, it will build his vocabulary to where he can pull from it. To help him use words instead of crying, the strategy access would be most beneficial. This child has difficulty communicating with his peers and often cries when he want to use a toy that another child has. Using the access strategy over multiple times will help the child learn to use words to communicate as well as social interaction skills.
It sounds like these strategies are going to be very helpful in getting your focus child to communicate by using his words. It does sound like using the access strategy will be good for him to learn how to say what he wants or needs.
ReplyDeleteIt must be frustrating for him to be unable to communicate the way he may desires. Hopefully by increasing his vocabulary he will have the tools needed to express himself without tears.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you definitely have the right idea of what he needs. He sure needs to learn some vocabulary so that he can use words rather than cry and whine.
ReplyDeleteI agree Regina, the access strategy would be ideal. If you just withhold what he is crying and whining for, he will have to decide to attempt to speak or not get the item he desires. A good strategy followed by a natural consequence, which is a good lesson for the child.
ReplyDeleteMy focus child is also delayed in the area of speech and language. We also use the strategies commenting and expanding most often. I think that it helps for the child to hear what they are trying to say using the proper words and sounds.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Karen. I believe that expanding is a good way to improve this child's particular skills. I have been suprised at how much my case study child has actually learned by having others expand what he is saying even if it is adding a color word to what he says. John: ball...then I say :John has a blue ball and then he repeats blue ball.
